contrary to the norm
The other evening Chris and I were taking a walk in our neighborhood. The sidewalk that we were on was wide enough for the two of us to walk side-by-side, with a little room to spare. Just like any other night, we came across another person walking. Chris fell behind me, as usual, to allow the other person to pass. I continued on the right side of the sidewalk. The man walking toward us continued on the same side as me. He looked right into my eyes and continued walking straight toward me. Almost like he was playing chicken. And he continued. Until we nearly ran into each other, and I decided to unnaturally move to the opposite side of the sidewalk. The whole stinking time he was looking straight into my eyes. We're not sure if it was some sort of social experiment that he was trying out, but it sure went against everything that I know to be true about social courtesies in this country. Maybe he was from England. He better have been from England. I should've asked, as he was staring straight at me: "Who do you think you are? Some silly Englishman?!"

Elisa, this is one of the funniest things I've ever read. Cf. Joseph Heller.
